Gavin Brown

Dr. Gavin Brown and Dr. Joshua Knowles are Senior Lecturers in the Machine Learning and Optimization group. Dr. Brown specializes in machine learning, in particular information theoretic methods for feature extraction and selection. His most recent work has been on a theoretical framework, which has proven a unifying principle for the past 25 years of research in this area, Additional interests include ensemble methods, for which his PhD won the UK British Computer Society Distinguished Dissertation Award. Dr. Knowles is world leader in multi-objective optimization techniques with an h-index of 44. He has won Best Paper awards in the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation on two occasions, and is regularly invited for keynote/panel events at international conferences. He collaborates with the SKA experiment by developing novel optimization algorithms to handle the complex data that will be generated in discovering pulsars.
