Tom Thomson

Prof. Tom Thomson is director of the Electronic Information Storage Systems (EISS) group within the School of Computer Science. Prior to coming to Manchester in October of 2007, he was a research staff member at IBM Almaden Research Center/ Hitachi San Jose Research Center in San Jose, California since 2000. His work in the Exploratory Magnetic Media and Phenomena group at IBM/Hitachi focused on novel nanoscale materials for data storage, in particular lithographically defined nanostructures for patterned media and high anisotropy nanoparticles. The EISS group has a well-equipped clean room environment with, for example, electron beam lithography, scanning electron microscopy, film deposition and optical lithography. EISS is investigating novel graphene devices with particular expertise on graphene-based sensors and magnetism in graphene. Prof. Thomson leads the university strategy on graphene-based computer systems.
